Garden Notes
What GOTS and OCS Actually Mean on Our Tees
A plain-language read of the organic-cotton certificates on the blanks we print — and what they do not cover.
Keanu patrols the hyssop like the garden owes him rent. We try to choose fabric the same way we choose plants: carefully, without pretending a label does more work than it does.
A lot of our apparel blanks are 100% organic combed ring-spun cotton. On the product pages for those tees, you will see a specific sentence about the fabric: it holds certifications for its organic cotton content under GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OCS (Organic Content Standard). That wording matters. It is about the cotton in the blank — not a claim that Keanu Organics is a GOTS-certified brand, and not a promise that every step after printing carries the same hangtag.
Take the Forest Guardian Tee. Specs match what we sell across several garden prints: about 4.6 oz / 155 g/m², regular fit, and that GOTS + OCS fabric note on the organic cotton content. Same family of blank as other organic cotton tees in the shop — for example the Patience & Poison Organic Mid Tee and the Mahavatar Keanu Blessing Organic Cotton Tee.
Those organic cotton tee blanks sit in the Stanley/Stella organic tee family we print through Printful-style fulfillment — the same “fabric holds GOTS and OCS for organic cotton content” language you will find on the product bullets. We are not renaming the certificate. We are pointing at the sentence that is already on the page.
OCS is mostly a chain-of-custody story: it tracks that organic fiber content from farm into the textile. GOTS goes further — organic content plus stricter rules around processing and social criteria for the certified supply chain. Both are third-party standards. Neither turns a printed shirt into a perfect object. They tell you something real about the cotton path for the blank we start from.
What we will not stretch:
- Garment-dyed ring-spun pieces labeled simply as cotton (not organic) do not get this organic story.
- Ceramic mugs do not get textile certificates.
- On-demand printing means we talk about the blank’s fabric certifications honestly, without implying the finished, decorated garment is sold as a GOTS-labeled finished product with a retail hangtag.
Related garden bag note: the Patience & Poison tote is listed on our page as 100% certified organic cotton twill. We keep that claim at “certified organic cotton” on the tote unless a specific standard is named on the listing — same rule, same garden. If you want the tee-side certs spelled out by name, the organic cotton tee product pages are the clearest place to start.
If you want the short version while Keanu ignores the whole conversation from the mulch: organic cotton on these tees is not marketing fog. GOTS and OCS are named on the product page because the fabric’s organic content is certified that way. Read the bullets. Ask us if something is unclear. We would rather under-claim than sound like a brochure.
